Micro-sclerotherapy

Micro-sclerotherapy

Spider veins on the legs are like varicose veins but smaller.  They are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins and are often red, blue or purple in colour.  They can look like tree branches or spider webs and can appear in clusters.

Spider veins can be caused by hormonal changes such as pregnancy, sun damage or local injury.  They can also occur as a result of larger underlying varicose veins that are not always visible, so it is important to get these checked out by a professional who can check for any valve incompetence within the veins.

Injection Micro-sclerotherapy is a treatment for spider veins which involves injecting a chemical substance called “sclerosant” using fine needles.  The sclerosant irritates the inner wall of the veins and causes them to become inflamed; the vein walls then stick together and the vein is broken down and carried away by the body.

The number of treatments required depends on the size and extent of the veins.  If only a small number of spider veins are to be treated, sometimes only 2 or 3 treatments will be adequate. It is possible that only 1 treatment is necessary, however, this is all dependent on the number and severity of the veins and we can discuss this during your consultation.
